Visiting Favignana? Useful facts to bear in mind

Favignana - Town

Favignana – Town

No matter where you’re travelling from to visit Favignana, there are a few bits of general information that will come in very handy indeed.

Maybe you’re visiting some other parts of Sicily on a true Italian journey, or even Italy overall, or maybe your eyes are firmly on the Favignana prize, but whatever your plan, it’s important to make sure you target your visit at the time when the weather suits your needs the most, as well as understanding the key points to make your visit more comfortable, and of course, more enjoyable.

Weather

The weather in Sicily overall, including the island of Favignana, follows a typically Mediterranean pattern, which is great news for summer visitors! You can expect seemingly endless sunshine during the typical summer months of July and August, with June and September beautifully mild times to visit. In peak season, the temperatures can easily hit the mid 30s, with bright blue skies, making the crystal clear waters sparkle.

In comparison to this, winters are obviously cooler, but never freezing! December is the coolest and wettest month of the year, when daytime temperatures are around 14 degrees, dropping to around 10 degrees during the evening. December is also when you’re most likely to get plentiful rain, but despite that, winter is a beautiful time to visit, when it is quiet, and you can truly see the day to day life of Favignana right before your eyes, unaffected by any kind of tourism.

If you are visiting during the summer months, remember a high SPF sun-cream and a hat! Also remember to drink plenty of water, as that Sicilian summer sun can be hot, hot, hot!

Accommodation

There are varied options for accommodation during your visit to Favignana. Camp sites are a great idea for those who want to really be at one with nature, and the natural beauty that is evident all over the island. You’ll find high quality sites, and these are best pre-booked, to ensure you get that top spot, especially during the popular summer months. Families find the camping option very popular, so if you want a different kind of summer holiday, certainly check this idea out.

Alternatively, Favignana is blessed with several hotels and holiday apartments, and a search online before you embark on your journey is a good idea. You won’t find the huge all inclusive hotels that you find in major holiday resorts, but that offers a charming and refreshing change, with smaller hotels, some family run, offering a B&B option. A self catering apartment option gives you the chance to cook yourself, perhaps grabbing some of the deliciously fresh seafood from the harbour, and rustling up a delicious meal yourself.

General information

Currency – Being part of Italy, Favignana obviously works with the Euro, so you will need to change your currency before you arrive. There are no change offices around the island, so if you need to do some changing, it is advised you take a 30 minutes trip to Trapani, the biggest nearby city on the Sicily mainland. You can use major credit and debit cards in some places, however you might find it easier to use cash, especially in the smaller shops, restaurants, and obviously on the markets. There are three ATM’s where you can withdraw cash, in the main island’s squares.

Time zone – Italy is GMT +1, falling into the Central European time zone, so adjust your watch accordingly!

Telephone code – The international dialling code for Italy overall is +39. Emergency numbers are 112 (police) and 118 (medical emegency).
