image descriptionHOW TO GET TO FAVIGNANA

Like most island paradises in the world, Favignana has easy links with the mainland, and in this case off the western coast of beautiful Sicily.

Favignana is part of an archipelago of islands called the “Egadi Islands” (or “Aegadian Islands”), the others being Marettimo and Levanzo plus the small rocks of Maraone and Formica. They are located in Southern Italy and the islands are very close to western Sicily itself, which is great for doing a little further exploration around the area, and Favignana is only four miles off the coast.

Sicily and Favignana

The best way? Fly into Trapani or Palermo, and catch the ferry to Favignana from Trapani port. Other ports linking Favignana are Marsala and Naples (this one limited to Saturdays and to only a couple of months a year, usually July and August). You can easily check prices and book your ferry to Favignana, which we strongly recommend because it gets crowded in summer and you could lose the whole day without any chance to get to the island.

If you go for the Palermo option, yes, you could spend a little time exploring another destination, but you then have to catch a bus to Trapani, a two hours’ journey, to catch the hydrofoil, so flying direct into Trapani International Airport is probably the simplest option, and you can save time by buying your ticket online ahead of your arrival. The port is around half an hour away from the airport. Your sailing will only take around half an hour, and the bright blue sea en-route is more than enough to open your eyes to the beauty of the area.

Your first landfall on the island will be in Favignana Town, and this is where most of the main life on the island is, which is handy! Favignana Town is located on the east of the island, but it’s also very well placed for getting out and about around the rest of the island. The butterfly shape of the island itself means that you have two flat sides, with a bump in the middle, in the form of a hill, well, the bump is easily accessible via a tunnel that goes through the middle of it, so you have no excuse to not be a little adventurous!

Getting out and about …

One of the great things about exploring Favignana, apart from the beautiful scenery of course, is that it’s easy enough to get around on foot. It’s not a huge island, so it’s perfectly possibly to put on a pair of comfortable walking shoes and head off on your own steam. If that sounds a little too much like hard work, then hire a scooter or car from the port. Buses service the island too, but do bear in mind that the laid back way of life does tend to extend to the bus network!

Summer months sees a slightly alternative mode of transport around the island, and it’s quite a cute idea! The tourist train has a few different circuits, so check out which you prefer, but you can see plenty from this ideal holiday attraction.

Try and see more of the island than just Favignana Town if you’re able, because even though it’s easy to stay where most of the facilities are, you’re seriously missing out on the natural beauty of the island if you don’t get out and about a little.
